Universities are home to some of the brightest minds and a source of brilliant healthcare innovations, from penicillin and test-tube babies to needle-free injections and the portable defibrillator – to name just a few!
Aligned with the McCann World Group commitment to innovation, CMC’s Orla Weir was delighted to participate on the panel of the Midlands ‘ICURe’ options event (innovation to commercialisation of university research) this week, focused on helping early career researchers develop the knowledge, skills and funding to commercialise their work.
Orla was invited to bring expertise from the pharma industry to the ‘Dragons Den’ style panel – providing recommendations and feedback to the research teams, helping to guide future development and support commercial success. Presentation topics ranged from bone cancer therapy, to helping people with Parkinson’s disease, to software for managing medication side effects.
Orla commented: ‘It was great to sit alongside innovators and investors to see the impact of the research and the business training funded under the ‘ICURe’ programme. The researchers met 100 stakeholders in the process, detailing their business ideas and testing market potential. The participants’ development through the process and their energy was inspiring. I wish them every success for the future.’
The Midlands ICURe programme is sponsored by Innovate UK, and led by the University of Warwick
